A child asks dad, “Why are your breasts so small?”

Questions from children

I am sure the question in the title of the post, “Why are your breasts so small?”, has raised many eyebrows. Actually, this is the question Dear Son asked me today. Dear Son is four years old. As his Dear Dad, I was not sure what to answer. I am sure all parents have some strategies in answering children’s questions that are difficult to address.

The first possible answer

When Dear Son asked me the question, too many strategic answers flashed through my mind within a blink of an eye. The first one is, “Boys have small breasts and girls have large breasts.” Complications of this answer also popped up immediately. What if Dear Son goes to his pre-school tomorrow and starts telling his teacher, “Boys have smaller breasts and girls have larger breasts”, assuming that his teacher might not be aware of this important piece of information. This might be an information that our neighbors might be missing as well. Dear Son might consider it his responsibility to teach everyone such an essential finding.

The second possible answer

The second answer that I though of was a little bit based on how I can take the opportunity to encourage Dear Son to eat more vegetables. 🙂 The answer I thought of was, “I did not eat much vegetables when I was little and that did not allow me to grow my breasts any larger than what I have now.” My brain short-circuited by a few possible consequences. What if Dear Son eats vegetables and keeps expecting that his breasts will grow. Or, what if Dear Son says that he does not want big breasts and he stops eating whatever amount of vegetables he consumes now. The third consequence again relates to his responsibility to teach everyone how to grow breasts.

A third possible answer

The third answer I thought of is, “Moms have large breasts and dads have small breasts.” While this is a fact but it will raise more confusions. Fatherhood does not necessarily lead to smaller breasts. Everyone with breasts is not necessarily a mother either.

The answer given

After a few embarrassing moments, I looked at Dear Wife with a help-seeking face. She helped me out — “When girls grow up their breasts also grow. Breasts of boys do not grow as much.” Dear Son just said, “Oh” and started to play with his puzzles. It appeared, he did not care much about the answer.

Concluding remarks: What is your experience regarding children’s questions that are hard to answer? Do you have any suggestion on “yet to come” harder questions?

  1. hahahahhahaha such a cute post. Kids always ask stuff when we are “out of our bases”. Since they ask so candidly, one is stripped from any ability of a quick rebutal! I have a great story like that. I was out in a family trip with my now fiancé. He proposed, and my fiancé’s sister told her five year old: “look, your uncle is gonna marry cookiemonster!”. Then, the kid asked “what for?”

    You just gotta laugh.

    1. Haha … That is a funny story. I have got my quote of the day — “What for?”

Thank you for visiting and commenting. Have a wonderful day.

  2. Ahahahaha I loved this post! This are the funny things that you can hear from a kid. And also the kind of things we struggle about how to answer. It’s always good to have people like you that share their experiences and give us funny answers too lol

    1. Kids are so much fun! Kids are so innocent. That makes it more adorable. Thank you for visiting and commenting.

  3. You have chosen the correct answer that did not bring another question. To be honest, I am a dad and if my son were asking me this question I would give him the first answer :)))
All the respect for you, because you know to handle much better with your son!

    1. Haha … All parents have their strategies. All strategies are fine. Kids will learn in a natural pace anyway. Thank you very much for visiting and commenting. Best regards.

  4. Haha, sorry but I had to laugh! At least all of the possible scenarios and answers were only in your head. You did try your best to be creative and helpful though so you shouldn’t feel bad or discouraged. Us, women, are just naturally good at telling our kids how some things work… and fathers are good in other areas 🙂 that’s why you have your lovely wife – you two work as a team! I am glad that she lent you a hand.

Just be prepared for the future… there’s still a long way and a lot of questions such as ”where did I come from”, ”how does Santa deliver all of his presents so fast” and more!

    1. Yes, definitely moms are great at speaking with kids regarding complex matters. 🙂 I agree, more complicated questions are yet to come.

Thank you for visiting and commenting. Have a wonderful week.

  5. Children are simply the most wonderful things in the world. They are so innocent and this makes it so hard to get mad at them for whatever reason. Remember in the story of the The Emperor’s New Clothes. Everyone could see the Emperor was naked and making a fool of himself. But it was a child, full of innocence and truth and all things good, screamed out loud – “But he isn’t wearing anything at all!” 🙂

That story cracks me up each time.

    1. Yes, I know the story. Thank you for sharing this here. Definitely, children symbolizes the innocence of the society. I wish we could think and be accepting like kids on many complex matters. Thank you so much for visiting and commenting. Have a wonderful weekend ahead.

  6. This is funny. Kids are really curious and smart little one. There will always that time that they will caught you off guard with their questions. But be careful with your answers because they will always believe what you say.

    1. Haha ? definitely. I noticed that my kid believes everything I say. They are so adorable and wonderful at this age. Thank you for visiting and commenting.

  7. Little ones are always inquisitive, and they notice everything! It’s hard to know sometimes what to say to the tricky questions like this, especially like you said, little ones like to share new information with everyone sometimes! Your second answer reminds me of when I was little, my grandmother told me to eat onions because it makes your chest hair grow! Needless to say… I didn’t want to eat the onions. ? Just a simple, truthful explanation works best!

    1. Haha. I agree — truthful answer (kids’ version) is the best. Thanks for visiting and sharing your childhood memory. Have a wonderful evening.

  8. Why just your dear 4 year old son even I now a senior always had this in my mind and that is why should men have breasts at all (lol) With this frame of mind asking me to give you a sensible answer that would lead to no more further questions would not be quite a wise thing to do. Good your wife came to your rescue

    1. Lol ?. Yes, Dear Wife was the savior that day. She always finds the perfect thing to say in such situations. Thank you for visiting and commenting. Have a wonderful day.

  9. Raising a child is a really difficult thing to do. Whilst you are trying to protect their innocence from the truth, the harsh and cruel world and the inappropriate content, censorship and being overprotective does just as much harm, if not even more. The difficulty lies in getting the balance right, the fine line between being a mature parent who is protecting their child from the knowledge of taboo topics or being an informative and realistic teacher. I hope that parents know when it’s the right time to give their child the knowledge required in this ever more transparent digital age.

    1. Such a valuable contribution! Definitely the key is to realize the balance. We hope we will be able to figure out the right time and the balance. Thank you so much for visiting and commenting.

  10. Best play in this case is to tell the kid the truth. The question is not really awkward as the kid is merely curious and he deserves that knowledge since he asked. The response of the parent will determine the awkwardness of the situation.

    1. Agreed. An age appropriate correct response is the best answer. Kids ask questions because they are curious. We make it and feel awkward although it is the perfect time for a kid to ask such questions. Thanks for reading and commenting.

  11. Mum’s answer nailed it. It’s better to have their questions answered as directly as possible.I teach kids in my neighbourhood, sometimes I wonder how they come up with such questions.A kid once asked me “Are children actually conceived after parents have sex or they fall from heaven?”

    1. I agree — direct answer at children’s level is always better. Of course, definitely kids fall from heaven; there is not doubt in that. 🙂 Have a wonderful evening.

  12. So true! my kid oftentimes asked questions but didn’t really matter whatever the answer of it haha! Good thing with it is we should still pay attention to them and not brush it off . They are so funny at times!

    1. Indeed. Kids are really funny. They are too curious many times. Thank you for visiting and sharing your experience. Have a wonderful evening.

  13. I don’t have kids yet so I can’t really answer your question but I really enjoyed this post. It made me laugh. Whenever I hear about these troubles, when kids ask you these weird questions, I try to put myself in a position to answer. I don’t know if I would have any better ideas than you did. Dear Wife’s answer was the best, though. I’ll remember that one just in case I need it in the future. Haha.

    1. I am glad to know that the post made you laugh. Sometimes the questions are so sudden that it is hard to come up with an answer instantaneously. Definitely, the answers must be correct as well as kid-friendly. Coming up with the kid-friendly version quickly is the hard part. 🙂 Thank you for visiting and commenting.

  14. I’m glad Dear Wife jumped in with the perfect answer. With any of the other options, women with small breasts might have taken offense as well. 🙂

    1. I did not think it this way but you are right. I will change the title to make sure readers clearly understand that this is about a child asking his dad a question.

  15. Best answer is a straightforward one ? I am looking forward for all the why’s of my own little one, unfortunately she was taken from us ?

    1. Thank you for visiting and commenting. I am so sorry to know about your loss while I was reading your blog. I do not have words that can comfort a grieving mom. I admire your courage and strength. Your visit and comment are much appreciated.

  16. The little ones sure do ask interesting questions. They are so honest and direct! We should never lose that honestly in life.

  17. hilarious ???post I do understand being father it is difficult to answer the questions of your kids

    1. Yes, sometimes it is hard to answer such questions! Hopefully I will become better at it over time. 🙂 Thank you for visiting and commenting.

  18. Once a pupil remarked: Sir, you got boobies, you need to wear a bra.
Everybody started to laugh, me included.

I was overweighed and indeed it looked like small breasts.

In the meantime I lost some weight …..

    Kind regards,

    1. Haha… that is hilarious, I mean, the student’s remark part. I love this simplicity about kids — they say whatever they feel without filtering and it is cute up to some point. I appreciate your visit and comment. Have a wonderful Friday followed by a great weekend.

  19. At some point dear son may ask why men have breasts. That question may be easier to answer as it seems to have something to do with aging.

    1. Or, it may be hard to answer because by that time Dear Son might be asking too many follow up questions. 🙂 Thank you for commenting. Have a wonderful weekend ahead.

    1. Thank you for reading and commenting! I am happy to know that you liked the post. Wish you a wonderful weekend ahead.

  20. This was such a refreshing and fun read, to hear it from a dad’s perapective of the fun challenges of raising kids! Kids do have awkward outright cringe worthy questions that catch us off guard. And true, they really don’t care much about the answer or details since their attention span is usually in seconds!

    1. I am glad to hear that you liked the post. I agree that a kid’s attention span is short. Sometimes, Dear Son keeps asking why, why, why. After I answer, his response is just, “oh”, as if he does not have any interest on that matter. 🙂

I appreciate your visit and comments. Have a wonderful Thursday!

  21. there are even more questions on the horizon, answer from the heart and let science be the guide for you…. I teach 8th grade and have noticed we all begin with questions and at some point the questions change to ‘what do I have to know?’ ‘what do I have to do?’ and sadly, ‘will it be on the test?’ …… celebrate the inquiry and hopefully it will lead to a life of inquiry…. and wonder. Peace

    1. Thank you for the heads up. We will try to be ready over time. Sadly, questions like “will it be on the test”, is common even when kids grow up and go to college. I remember many of my classmates asking that question many times in every class. Thanks a lot for visiting our blog and writing a valuable comment.

  22. My niece’s teacher once told my sister, “If you don’t believe what she tells you about what goes on in class, I won’t believe what she says about what goes on at home.” Of course this was said with tongue-in-cheek, but it gets the point across. The biggest issue I encountered was when my son asked about how people have children. I told him they grow up, go to college, get married and then have a baby. He was fine with this until, in first grade, a classmate’s 16 year-old sister had a baby. She straightened him out, and then he came home to tell me I was mistaken. Naturally, that led to a more detailed, but still g-rated, conversation.

    1. Haha ? these are really funny stories. We are getting ready for the question — how people have babies. Your answer is cool—they grow up, go to college, get married and then have a baby. I will remember this as an answer. Hopefully, Dear Son will not find a counter example. Thanks a lot for visiting and commenting. Have a wonderful day.

  23. A simple and truthful answer has not grow in to another question i guess.. at least just for kids

    1. Agreed! A simple and truthful answer is the best. Luckily this time Dear Son did not throw his repeated “why”s. Thank you for visiting and commenting! Have a wonderful day.
